MILANO FILM NETWORK
A festival a year long

MFN - Milano Film Network unites the experience and resources of Milan’s seven film festivals for a cultural offering throughout the year and a series of services for those who operate in the cinema and in the audiovisual sector in Milan and in Italy.

The network is realized thanks to the contribution of the Fondazione Cariplo, is the result of the self-organization of the seven film festivals held in Milan – African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival, Festival MIX Milano, Filmmaker, Invideo, Milano Film Festival, Sguardi Altrove Film Festival, Sport Movies & Tv Fest – and aims to include not only operators of the audiovisual sector but also institutions and socio-economic players, in recognition of the value of the cinema as a form of art but also as a productive sector which generates positive consequences for the urban fabric.

The primary objective of the project is, in the short term, to create a system of cinema around the city of Milan, i.e. a stable model of collaboration through an inter-organizational network, in the first place between the film festivals, which allows an innovative exchange of knowledge, instrumental resources, services and opportunities.

In the long term, the project aims to make Milan “The city of independent cinema”, making the most of its resources through a network open to the participation of other subjects.

The activity of the MFN is developed in two main areas. On the one hand, an offer of SERVICES linked to the production of the event supporting the network and at the disposal of the local area, including management of hospitality, the systems of subtitling, technological adaptation of the technical equipment for the screenings (in view of the inevitable passage from film to digital technology); movement of the screening copies of the films that will be shown during the festivals; the service of venue management, in agreement with the management of the cinemas and the other culktural venues; the organization of the voluntary service, typical of the cultural events with a great participation, in particular by young people.

On the other hand, the organization of a calendar of activities of scheduling and permanent exhibition, in collaboration with other subjects who also operate in the cinema, such as te creation of a common archive and the digitalization of the works in the archives of the individual festivals, the distribution of the films in the cinemas, the organization of workshops and training paths, starting up initiatives of production of audiovisual projects.

When the cinema was born it was a documentary with the Lumière Brothers and during the 20th century it never ceased to measure up to reality, the quest for the splendour of the truth or critical or propagandistic confrontations with social reality. From the end of the 1950s, with the establishment of cinéma vérité, its role became particularly fertile. The methods of the cinema in direct recording are picked up by fiction cinema and in parallel, together with an intense theoretical debate, the documentary gains autonomous channels of production and exhibition. The expressive range extends and documentary genres flourish: in addition to urban symphonies and ethnographic explorations there are social and institutional analyses, rockumentaries and intimate diaries. The artists revolutionize found footage film and the new technologies of communication transform the very idea of documentary device. The four meetings of the workshop intend to offer some keys to access contemporary documentaries, a simple map to be oriented in a fascinating world in continuous change.

 Data inizio: 11/05/2014
 Data fine: 11/05/2014
 Durata: FROM 10 A.M. TO 1.30 P.M.
 Costo: 15 euro
 Scadenza iscrizioni: 2014-05-10

MILANO FILM NETWORK in collaboration with the Festival of African, Asian and Latin American Cinema presents FOM PSYCHOLOGY TO THE CREATIVE DOCUMENTARY: MASTER CLASS WITH  ZEINA DACCACHE, Sunday 11th May  2014, from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at Spazio Oberdan (viale Vittorio Veneto 2).

Zeina Daccache, in competition at the 24th edition of the Festival of African, Asian and Latin American Cinema with her film Scheherazade's Diary, is a Lebanese director and documentary-maker who originally trained as a psychologist and in particular as a drama therapist.

The workshop she conducts has the aim of illustrating her cinema and her methodology as a documentary-maker: her work always takes place in a group of marginalised people, often in confinement (prisoners, psychiatric patients) and makes use of notions of psychology, acting and documentary directing to obtain a therapeutic effect, a strong social impact and  an audiovisual end product of both social and artistic value.

The final audience of the documentaries by Zeina Daccache is civil society, the very society that imposes laws and rules that profoundly affect the life of each day of marginalized communities and that Zeina’s work  tries to change.

During the master class the director will show extracts from her films, discussing the difficulties encountered during the group work and the strategies implemented to overcome them. A Q&A session will conclude the master class and complete the lesson.

WHO IS IT FOR

The workshop addresses directors and documentary students, teachers, social workers and psychotherapists, but also the general public.

The master class will be in Italian.

COST

The cost of the fee is 15 euro per person and includes free entrance to the screening of the film Scheherazade's Diary, to be shown on Saturday 10th May at 7.30 p.m. at the Spazio Oberdan.

Milano Film Network offers for 2014 a productive workshop concentrated on the development of an audiovisual project. Although overlooked in the Italian system, development is the most important and critical phase of the creative and production process, the one on which the concrete outcome of the filmic ideas and much of the organizational, productive and financial structure of the film depend.

The project resumes the experience of  Filmmaker, which since 1985 has productively supported the work of independent filmmakers and which in 2012, with the support of the Fondazione Cariplo,  curated the Nutrimenti terrestri Nutrimenti celesti competition announcement.

The project

Through this competition announcement, Milano Film Network, with the support of the Fondazione Cariplo, intends to support authors in the development and production of films and audiovisuals with an innovative language, techniques, contents and production methods.

The course is structured in a set of theoretical-practical discussions, conducted by scholars and filmmakers with international profiles, together with a constant activity of comparison and discussion with some figures of reference and a further phase of tutoring.

The whole project is aimed at developing film ideas which, once defined in projects for production, will be selected and supported from the creative, organizational and financial points of view.

In progress is open to projects of fiction, documentaries, experimental cinema and series.

The workshop will have the participation of the following figures from the Italian scene: the directors Leonardo Di Costanzo (A scuola, L'intervallo) and Michelangelo Frammartino (Il dono, Le quattro volte), the producers Marta Donzelli, Gregorio Paonessa (Vivo Film) and Nicola Giuliano (Indigo Film), the film editor Carlotta Cristiani (La variabile umana, Giorni e nuvole) and other professional figures. The candidates will also have the opportunity to meet various figures who work in the sectors of festivals and distribution, including Luciano Barisone (Vision du Réel), Fabrizio Grosoli (Officine Ubu), Rebecca De Pas (FID).

Who is it for

All authors, Italian or foreign, who on the closing date of the announcement have made at least one audiovisual work presented in public.

How to apply

To take part in the selection, a project of a film or audiovisual must be presented, with the following material:

a) Self-presentation and motivations of the author in relation to the project (1 page)

b) Curriculum with filmography (free format, maximum 2 pages)

c) Previous works (according to the ways shown on the entry form)

d) Brief synopsis of tjhe project under development (maximum 2 pages). Full freedom of genre and running time.

e) Director’s intentions (1 page)

f) Indication of the elements of feasibility of the project, of any creative and productive collaboration (max 2 pages).

g) Contacts

Closing date and place of presentation of the applications

Applications for admission must be uploaded filling in the relevant entry form at the link http://www.filmmakerfest.com/Home/Form/28 by and no later than 30th March  2014.

Conditions of participation

A commission appointed by the Milano Film Network will select, by 10th April 2013, up to a maximum of 20 candidates who will be required to pay an entry fee of euro 300.00.

The meetings will be in Milan, preferably at weekends, in the period between April and July 2014.

At the end of this phase, and no later than 15th September 2014, the candidates selected will have to produce a production dossier on the audiovisual project developed which will be evaluated by an external jury made up of experts from the sector and appointed by  Milano Film Network.

Only the dossiers presented by candidates who have attended at least 75% of the meetings will be admitted to the evaluation.

The jury will select the 5 winning projects, and will draw up a classification.

The MFN will support the best two projects classified economically with a contribution of euro 5000 each and will guarantee a period of further support by qualified tutors for the authors of all five projects selected.

The decisions of the commissions and of the organization are final.

All the applicants undertake to respect the following minimum conditions:

1. To show the logos of Milano Film Network and of Fondazione Cariplo in the opening credits of the audiovisual productions made, accompanied by the words “Work made with the contribution of Milano Film Network and Fondazione Cariplo”

2. Grant Milano Film Network and the festivals forming it the use of the works made in their institutional and non-profit making activities.

Titolo: On the other side of the looking glass

MFN presents 5 meetings on women’s cinema, by Daniela Persico and Patrizia Rappazzo and coinciding with the 21st Sguardi Altrove Film Festival.

The first Oscar for the best directing awarded to a woman did not come unti 2010 with the victory of Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker, a fact which apparently marks an important time for the history of the cinema, the “dream machine” which has always had a male view of the iconic figures of femininity. Film by women directors, on the other hand, tells a completely different history, and far from the mechanisms of Hollywood, it has found the way to confirm its otherness and reformulate a new language and renewed collective imagination. These five appointments are dedicated to the cinematic revolution carried on by the women who have chosen to goto the other side of  “Alice’s looking glass” . Starting off from the reflections emerging from the movements of the 1970s (the reinterpretations of Leni Riefenstahl by Susan Sontag, the now abandoned definition of “feminine” in the cinema), we reach the fertile contemporary situation between the presumed accessibility to mainstream cinema and the resistance of alternative forms of women’s directing in the visual arts and in more independent cinema.

The five meetings of the workshop intend to open up some perspectives on women’s cinema, which for a long time was neglected and marginal, today in a moment of successful expression and continuous theoretical elaboration.

The workshop includes lessons and screenings of films which will be introduced, commented and discussed.

The participants will be able to put themselves to the test with written exercises, following which the members of the Young People’s Jury of “Sguardi Altrove 2014 – Festival di regia al femminile” will be chosen.

In these meetings, the authors relate the practices, themes and stylistic figures of their artistic itinerary. In the lesson by the American maestro McElwee, his poetics will be approached in the first person, with respect to direct cinema. With the eclectic Claire Simon, the practices of a director who has ranged from the documentary to fiction, experimenting with the new functions of the multimedia function will be analysed, whilst with Giuseppe Morandi and Gianfranco Azzali a unique experience of documentary making and the story of the transformations of the countryside in the lower Po plain in the years of the great transformation of modernity will be explored. Three views of reality, three approaches by stylists, a course to approach how to translate reality into the imagination, questioning the consolidated forms of the cinema.

The title chosen for this workshop has a very specific meaning: it was the title given to the retrospective  (and then the catalogue) that Peter Kubelka curated for the  Centre Pompidou, in 1976, at the time it was opened, under the attentive gaze of  Pontus Hulten. The list of filmmakers present would give goose-pimples to any scholar of the cinema. No Rossellini, no Godard, no Hitchcock, no Welles. There appear in sequence a series of names and of artists like Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Ralph Steiner, Maya Deren, Stan Brakhage, Gregory Markopoulos, Andy Warhol, Paul Sharits, Robert Breer and Michael Snow. The retrospective and the catalogue include those filmmakers who are often  confined to a ghetto which bears the name of “experimental cinema” and to which usually histories of the cinema dedicate only a few sporadic pages. For Kubelka on the other hand, there is nothing “experimetnal” in all this. Those names define the only real history of the cinema. The workshop tries to understand why.

Titolo: Seize the time: directing workshop with Sylvain George

 Data fine: 10/09/2013
 Durata: 6 days
 Costo: 300 euro
 Scadenza iscrizioni: 0000-00-00
 Programma:

A collective film about the city, capable of grasping the social and political words and gestures of contemporary Italy and to find the right form to relate them. Sylvain George transforms in a didactic way Benjamin’s approach to the city which distinguishes his work as an insightful author of political and experimental cinema. His sensitivity and his ability to work with young people are translated into a set of invaluable suggestions for the gaze, in a guide to the discursive articulation of images, whether narrative or a non-fiction, and to a precise and intense confrontation on directing practices. A practical approach where the added value comes from the very great theoretical awareness of Sylvain George, from the solidity of his aesthetic-political project and from his ability to work with young people.
